As knitters and crocheters, we often look for the next inspiring project, the perfect yarn and techniques that feed our creativity and joy. I’ve been reflecting on where our vibrant community is headed this year, and I’m excited to share my predictions for what’s coming in 2025 and some tips to help you make the most of them.
Bouclé Yarns Will Fade Out
Although I favour a more natural style for our fibre here at Unaroo, I’ve recently seen plenty of bouclé yarn on my socials. Although this trendy yarn adds a fab, vintage texture to projects, it will likely take a back seat as trends progress this year. Instead, we’ll see rustic textures that allow intricate stitches to shine through. And yarns with a name we can all agree on how to pronounce!
Tip: Not sure what to swap bouclé for? 100% wool adds natural texture without the challenge of working with tricky loops.
Mindful, Meditative Making is Here to Stay
Crafting as a form of mindfulness isn’t just a trend—it’s become a cornerstone of how many knitters and crocheters approach their craft. In 2025, we’ll continue to see people turning to their projects for relaxation, focus and connection. Focus on slow stitching and satisfyingly repetitive patterns, such as garter stitch shawls or granny square homewares.
Tip: Why not set up a dedicated crafting routine? Whether that means brewing a pot of your favourite tea or lighting that special candle, these small moments can help create a relaxed, cosy space.
Monochrome Designs Will Steal the Spotlight
Expect to see more knit and crochet patterns designed in a single colour. But don’t mistake simplicity for boring! Designers are leaning into creative construction, intricate stitch patterns, and bold textures to let their work shine. Think cables, lace and clever construction that let a single colour shine. One-colour projects are perfect for showing off the beauty of handdyed yarns or natural wool shades.
Tip: Choose a colour you’ll love wearing or using for years to come. High-quality British wool in a neutral, undyed shade, like slate grey or cream, adds timelessness to your projects.
The Rise of British Wool
As sustainability and local sourcing become more central to our craft, British wool is stepping into the limelight. More brands and dyers are turning to British wool, for good reason. Wool from the UK is sustainable, durable and steeped in history. Plus, it supports local farmers and communities. With so many incredible British breeds to explore, from soft Bluefaced Leicester to sturdy Jacob, there’s a lot to love.
Tip: When shopping for yarn, look for labels with the British Wool Shepherd's Crook Mark. Not sure where to start? Explore yarns made with iconic British breeds like Bluefaced Leicester, Shetland or Wensleydale.
Transparency is a Must
As above, we’re certainly seeing a shift in the community towards a greater concern about where wool comes from. Whether it’s the sheep who gave their fleece to become your next skein or the country of origin, I expect to see more demand in 2025 for information on where yarn is produced and its environmental credentials. I think this passion is so exciting, and it is driving a change in the clothes and crafting space.
Tip: When buying yarn, look for brands that share information about their wool’s origins—whether it’s breed-specific, locally sourced or spun at a small mill. Ask questions and enjoy connecting with the story behind your yarn.
Copyright in Crafting Will Take Centre Stage
Designers and makers have recently been raising awareness about respecting intellectual property in knitting and crochet. In 2025, I predict we’ll see more dyers prioritising originality in their colourways and respecting the work of designers and artists. We’ll also see a stronger focus on celebrating original designs while discouraging copying patterns and sharing purchased patterns. Supporting designers ensures that they can continue creating for our vibrant community.
Tip: Make it a goal to purchase patterns directly from designers or reputable platforms this year. Your support makes a difference!
What Do You Think?
These are my guesses and hopes, but we are in for an exciting crafting year full of beautiful creations. Whether drawn to British wool, meditative making or bold monochrome designs, 2025 offers endless opportunities to explore, learn and create.
